Called together in response to the genocide of Palestinian people, we are a growing group of Humboldt County, California, residents working collaboratively to meaningfully engage our state and federal representatives on issues of peace and environmental justice. We encourage others to raise their voices as well.
In Humboldt County, the Board of Supervisors and city councils of Eureka and Arcata have adopted ceasefire resolutions. These resolutions, demanded by residents, involved hard but peaceful and productive conversations. We are calling upon our state and federal representatives to do the same.
Our Commitments
Humboldt Committee for Peace and Justice works collaboratively to promote lasting peace, social and environmental justice through grassroots organizing. We advocate for peace, locally and globally, protection of human rights and the rights of our living planet, adherence to international law, and improving the social and environmental inheritance of future generations.
We believe that social and environmental justice are deeply intertwined, and that we must work for both equally and simultaneously, with peace as our guiding principle, if we are going to create a future in which all life can flourish.
Genocide is the most abhorrant and devestating act of mankind and there is never any justification for it. Furthermore, environmental justice cannot coexist with ongoing militarism and war against occupied and oppressed people. Healthy communities and environments at home or anywhere can only truly exist with a culture and policies that create the same conditions globally.
Environmental Justice must extend to Palestine. Environmental justice must extend to Sudan. Environmental justice must extend to Ukraine, to Congo, to Lebanon, and to Yemen. Environmental justice must extend to every place on earth.
Our Priorities
Ceasefire and End to Military Aid in Gaza
We are calling for an immediate ceasefire. To achieve this, we need:
- A complete end to weapons shipments and military aid to Israel.
- An end to the blocking of humanitarian aid to all occupied areas of Palestine.
Ongoing Accountability
Our goal is to keep these issues in front of our elected representatives, ensuring they know when their actions (or inactions) do not represent the will of their constituents. We demand explanations from representatives regarding their inaction on the issue of Palestine and/or their support of war during a global climate crisis. We also ask our representatives to hold a rapid series of town hall meetings, with digital access, in order to build a coalition capable of addressing the climate crisis that can build lasting peace.
We asked Congressman Huffman specifically for a meeting to explain why the US is supporting Israel, which he obliged. We are now calling on him to discuss with his broader constituency, in a town hall, his rationale for supporting genocide. We also call on him to explain his rationale for diverting resources away from the climate crisis by supporting an ongoing war which has generated greenhouse gasses rivaling the annual emissions of Germany or Canada.
Governments, especially powerful ones like the U.S., must align their actions with their stated commitments to addressing climate change. We believe this begins by shifting expeditiously towards a global ‘Marshall Plan’ of climate and environmental restoration that builds true, lasting global security and moves away from fossil fuel dependence and militarism.
Environmental Justice cannot coexist with ongoing militarism and war, nor the occupation and oppression of land and people. Healthy communities and environments at home cannot exist without policies that create the same conditions globally.
